MANILA (PNA) -– President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed Elias Yusoph as new commissioner of the Commission on Election (Comelec).
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita made the announcement during a press briefing at the New Executive Building in Malacanang.
Ermita said Yusoph will fill-in in the position left by Comelec Commissioner Romeo Brawner, who died of heart attack on May 29, 2008.
He also said Yusoph is highly recommended by the Bishops-Ulama Conference as co-chaired by Davao Archbishop Fernando Robles Capalla and Hilario Gomez Jr., co-convenor, Bishop Emeritus of the United Church of Christ of the Philippines and the representative of the Ulama League of the Philippines Dr. Hamid Bara.
“The appointment of Yusoph in the Comelec will not only show the sincerity of the government in appointing a Muslim in this Constitutional body but will also infuse a new personality in the Commission,” Ermita said, as he read the Ulamas-Bishop’s recommendation letter.
Prior to his new appointment, Yusoph was former prosecutor of Marawi City since 1987.
He was also assigned at the Department of Justice as assistant city fiscal in 1983-1987 and special prosecutor in 1980-1983.
He passed the bar exam in 1977. (PNA)
