92% of Filipinos Enter 2009 With Hope: SWS

Nine out of ten (92%) of adult Filipinos are entering the New Year with hope rather than fear, according to the Fourth Quarter Social Weather Survey done from November 28 to December 1, 2008.

Hopefulness for the New Year slightly increased among classes ABC, from 88% in 2007 to 92% in 2008.

Compared to 2007, it did not change among class D at 92%, and class E, from 91% to 90%. Hope prevails even among the few with a sad Christmas

Among the 63% who expect a happy 2008 Christmas, 95% are entering the coming year with hope. However, even among the 8% who expect a sad Christmas, as many as 76% look forward to 2009 with hope.

The Fourth Quarter of 2008 Social Weather Survey was conducted over November 28 - December 1, 2008 using face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adults in Metro Manila, the Balance of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao (sampling error margins of ±2.5% for national percentages, ±6% for Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao, and ±4% for Balance Luzon). The area estimates were weighted by National Statistics Office medium-population projections for 2008 to obtain the national estimates.
